Note: The examples in this post are outdated. The feature was updated to be more intuitive. Please refer to current documentation in the Documentation Area for the latest instructions.

We have finally been able to get a very high quality full-length website thumbnail to generate automatically.

To use this feature, you would omit the Size= portion of the link and instead put full=1&scale=10. So, scale=10 would be 10% of 1024 or 102 pixels, in this case.

You can also use the optional &ymax= to specify the maximum height of the capture according to the original page height. So, for instance, if you put full=1&scale=10&ymax=1280, you will get an image that is first cropped at 1280 height and then resized to 10% -i.e. a final image size of 102x128 pixels.

Currently, the main limitation to this feature is that it will not capture FLASH elements in the page. So, if your site is 100% flash, it will be a blank image. This is due to a bug in a piece of software over which we have no control but it is slated to be fixed this year. So, once it is fixed, we will update our code accordingly.

Warning: Be sure to put these tags somewhere in your request BEFORE the &Url. Otherwise, the tags will be ignored and becomes part of the specific Url requested.

Hi

This looks like it will be an awesome feature, I look forward to using it to creating a history of some web pages over time.

I have some problems though

While

https://shrinktheweb.com/xino.php?embed=1&stwu=[USR]&STWAccessKeyId=[KEY]&Size=lg&stwUrl=http://www.dianomioffers.co.uk/&full=1&scale=100

the following gives me a 'problem detected' error

https://shrinktheweb.com/xino.php?embed=1&stwu=[USR]&STWAccessKeyId=[KEY]&Size=lg&stwUrl=http://www.isabrochures.co.uk/&full=1&scale=100

Is this a bug or am I missing something?

Thanks

Michael

OK on further investigation seems I'm getting

"Access Denied: Invalid Credentials or Quota Exceeded"

error - and I think the one that works is one that I had previously entered in to the system, the later ones being ones I've tried to generate automatically.

Oh and I guess I shouldn't have included my seccret key Smile Oh well, I'm sure I can trust everyone!

Hi doctor_regtools,

The problem is that you put the full-length parameters of &full&scale=100 onto the end of the request as if it were part of the URL you want to request. That page doesn't exist on the remote site. For instance, you are basically requesting a snapshot of:
http://www.dianomioffers.co.uk/&full=1&scale=100
That page doesn't exist on the site you want. Make sense?

What you want to get is:
http://www.dianomioffers.co.uk/

So, you should put the parameters BEFORE the &stwUrl= in the request. For example:
https://shrinktheweb.com/xino.php?embed=1&stwu=3055d&STWAccessKeyId=73213b82d688677&full=1&scale=100&stwUrl=http://www.dianomioffers.co.uk/

The final problem is that you are passing the &Size parameter -which is not used when capturing full-length thumbnails. I believe the system accounts for that and just ignores it. However, as a best practice, it is advisable to omit it when requesting full page captures.

Also, please be sure to "cache locally" files of this size because we have determined that we cannot archive large files like this. So, we will probably begin a policy of keeping them for a day and then deleting them.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

Best regards,

Brandon

Thanks Brandon, that's awesome.

Most of my URLs are working nicely now although this one is being stubborn:

https://shrinktheweb.com/xino.php?embed=1&Service=ShrinkWebUrlThumbnail&Action=Thumbnail&STWAccessKeyId=[KEY]&stwu=[USR]&full=1&scale=100&stwUrl=www.isabrochures.co.uk

Perhaps I just need to wait for some cache or something to clear, as I can't see anything different about this one.

Yes I'll be making local copies - we're basically using this service to keep screenshots of what pages looked like over time, although I think we'd be willing to pay for a history of this were that ever to be an option.

Thanks again - great service!

That last one that isn't working is a result of the infamous routing issues I'm having with ThePlanet (where the primary STW server resides).

I have a MEGA-server that I'm migrating to at Rackspace that should clear that issue up, but incessant Internet problems at my office have delayed this migration by 5 days already. Hopefully, it will be up-and-running on the new server soon --since it's costing an arm-and-a-leg but currently doing nothing. Wink

Thanks for the kudos and glad you like the service!

Brandon
p.s. As far as a history of websites as a service, anything is possible. It would require considerable storage space, however, so it wouldn't come as cheaply as most of the other PRO services, but perhaps it's something to consider later on down the road.

Thanks for the info.

Another question - is this feature intended to wok on specific pages

https://shrinktheweb.com/xino.php?embed=1&Service=ShrinkWebUrlThumbnail&Action=Thumbnail&STWAccessKeyId=[KEY]&stwu=[USR]&full=1&scale=100&stwUrl=news.bbc.co.uk/sport

for example, gives me the BBC's home page - not their sports page.

Perhaps I shouldn't try and combine two new beta features!

Actually, those two BETA features do work in conjunction with each other. You just left off the &inside=1 tag.

So, for a full screen capture of a specific inside page, you would use:

https://shrinktheweb.com/xino.php?embed=1&Service=ShrinkWebUrlThumbnail&Action=Thumbnail&STWAccessKeyId=[KEY]&stwu=[USR]&inside=1&full=1&scale=100&stwUrl=news.bbc.co.uk/sport

Cheers,

Brandon

It's no bother. Wink

I'm glad the service works well for you

The pages variables and the image are completely different.

fullpage width x should give full page image of width x px small

fullpage ymax should crop the image at y regardless of length

to restrict or frame the page rendering to 800x600-browser and generate a thumb in its typical presentation should use pagex and pagey where y is arbitrary for your generation, only for cropping the rendered image

I need "full page" width x (mini) with full length and will present the resulting image micro browser for your (free) public use.
