Denial of Service (DoS) Attacks

Despite all of our development resources being focused on the billing system overhaul, I just took some time to investigate several suspicious accounts. It is clear now that over the past 7 months, those accounts appear to have been launching a Denial of Service (DoS) attack to try to bring down the service for everyone.

Obviously, their on-going attempt has had no apparent impact but the fact that they are so strongly targeting us has prompted me to make a few changes to the delivery code. So, over the past 15 minutes, there were a few times that the service was placed offline in order to test some changes. Those changes are LIVE now and should be working as intended.

Their attacks took advantage of a feature used to help users troubleshoot their requests. So now, nothing will show in the logs unless your Full Logging is turned on. This should not present too much of an issue but just makes it a little less simple and obvious for users. Unfortunately, though, it is a necessary step to take; thanks to the losers.

While those malicious losers were unable to affect the service for other users, they were unnecessarily making hundreds of requests per second via an automated script and (most likely) hacked servers. The new code will make future DoS attacks of this nature even less effective or noticeable. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this unannounced upgrade.

Stuff like this makes me so angry, I don't understand why people try to ruin other's hard work.

Thank you for providing such a quality service and helping to combat the issue before it was detrimental to us users.

Why are there always retards out there who think it is fun to stop the enjoyment of other's.
Probably some spotty faced, overweight loser sitting in a dark room munching away on Twinkie's

There are about a dozen sites left that offer this type of service. ShrinkTheWeb is hands-down the VERY BEST one!!!

I wouldn't rule out involvement by a current or upcoming competitor. After repairing the damage and preventing future infiltration, the next step is for those of us who use your service, particularly your generous free version, to spread the word for you.

I'll be posting a favorable review soon! My site for PHP and WordPress developers is 3 months old this week and already in the Alexa top 150K. I'm sure many of our visitors would love to try/buy your product. I'll be using it soon myself.

Thanks for the support and kind words!

It "could" be a competing service but most of the smaller guys have all disappeared over the past year or so. Maybe the attacks will subside eventually too. One can always hope! haha...

Cheers,

Brandon
